Roberts Point trail is closed due to flooding. A slide wiped out part of the staircases. When questioned when it might reopen, DOC workers in the area said it will cost $250,000 to repair, and engineering is working on how to replace and repair the missing stairs..

Thanks for the update. I was hoping they’d have it all fixed for this 2014 summer, because last summer they said they might. Alas. I’ll change this blog entry…and maybe make a note for the next print run of books. Thanks for the head’s up!

Hiked this track a few days ago. There is still some damaged parts to scramble around, but not too bad. It was officially open that open per Park visitor centre in Franz Josef village. Cannot imagine doing that track in sandals, very slippery in parts. I had good boots, but still fell down a few times, probably cuz I was carrying a 12kg pack… I highly recommend this track, views are stunning.

Was open about a week ago! Awesome track, but took a wrong turn after the first swing bridge. Certainly wouldn’t want to do it in bad weather, but we hiked it when there was some wetness from the rain the previous day and drizzle that day. The new, third swing bridge is awesomely long; I counted 188 paces!

We did the hike but sadly we were not close to the glacier. It has receded so far that you’ll need binoculars to see the face in any detail. Helicopters were taking people up to the face for a hike on the glacier. Otherwise the hike was fun and all the bridges, stairs, etc a lot of fun.
